Climate Changes

Climate change is widely considered to be one of the greatest challenges facing our planet. ING believes it has a role to play by developing strategies to manage the increasing risks and opportunities this challenge presents.

To gain a better understanding of the issue, ING became a member of the Global Roundtable on Climate Change. The roundtable brings together high-level stakeholders to attempt to reach consensus on core scientific, economic and policy issues critical to shaping sound public policy on climate change. On 20 February 2007, ING signed the Joint Statement by the Global Roundtable on Climate Change: The Path to Climate Sustainability. This statement calls on society to set scientifically informed targets for the concentration of global greenhouse gases (GHGs) and to take immediate action in pursuit of those targets. Learn more about the Joint Statement.

ING was honoured as "Best in Class" in addressing climate change in a report released by the Carbon Disclosure Project. ING has again been included in The Climate Leadership Index, which comprises 68 of the FT500 companies that lead in their responses to climate change. ING 100% Carbon Neutral

In 2007, ING launched the global “Plant a Tree Campaign” in Malaysia. ING is supporting the planting and rehabilitation of 300 hectares of degraded tropical rainforest in Malaysia’s Danum Valley to offset our global CO2 emissions.

In 2007, ING became carbon neutral. In the same year, ING launched the global “Plant a Tree Campaign” in Malaysia. Through this environmental initiative, ING is supporting the planting and rehabilitation of 300 hectares (which is equivalent to 50,000 indigenous trees) in the degraded tropical rainforest located at Malaysia’s Danum Valley to offset ING’s global CO2 emissions.

The restoration of the forest also helps to re-establish and expand the habitats of the species native to the area.

In terms of energy usage, ING is purchasing 100% green energy for its offices in the Netherlands. This green electricity is generated by hydropower. In 2008, more ING business units globally will switch to green energy and further roll out ING’s existing energy efficiency programmes.

Environmental Care

“We recognise that certain natural resources are finite and must therefore be used responsibly” from ING Business Principles

ING Group supports the thesis that healthy economic growth and environmental care are two sides of the same coin. We are committed to conducting our business responsibly and environmental protection is a fundamental part of this commitment. The statement above describes ING Group’s approach to prevent, manage and, where possible, reduce the environmental impact caused by its operations. ING complies with all relevant environmental protection laws in the countries where it does business. In addition, ING has identified three areas in which it believes its direct impact on the environment is most material and which it can control most effectively: energy consumption, business travel and paper consumption.
